Polybot

Among my favorite experiences listening to music is a sense of “mishearing” a groove, which I sometimes  call “retroactive hearing”: one hears the beat and relates to it in a particular way, then some future event  serves to recontextualize that relationship, ratcheting the listener out of comfortable space and forcing a  readjustment. For a long time I wanted to write music that did this obsessively, and collaborating with New York’s So Percussion provided an ideal testing ground. For Polybot, the second piece in what became an ongoing series, I took a simple idea—breaking up a groove and hocketing it among several players—and pushed it through a variety of metric modulations. These “groove prisms” emerge slowly and eventually  take over the foreground, pulling the listener from security through peril and then back to solid ground, again and again. I also envisioned a condensed setup, imagining a choreography of communication between  players who share instruments and generally have to get out of each others’ way.
